Geology

The mine lies within Klerksdorp famous Witwatersrand Basin. Archean-aged Witwatersrand basin district consists inter-bedded sequence arenaceous argillaceous sediments.

The 6km thick sequence moves laterally 300km north-east / south-west 100km north-west / south-east Kaapvaal Cratonne. west eastern section basin overlain 4km volcanic sedimentary rocks belonging Archaean Proterozoic Mesozoic period.

Gold within less-than-2m-thick laterally quartz pebble conglomerate horizons reefs. Vaal Reef laterally extensive rich conglomerate dominates mine.

The Vaal reef includes successive quartzite packages oligomictic conglomerates concentrated series non-conformities. reef divided into eight different geozones. unique facies distinct grade characteristics identified. facies mineralised 50m thickness crystalline nodular pyrite uraninite carbonaceous material bottom conglomerate layer.
